Step off the tourist trail and into the real Morocco. This intimate 3-day experience takes you from Marrakech through the Atlas Mountains to the Skoura Oasis, where you spend a full day living and learning alongside a local Berber family. Bake bread, work the land, explore the ancient irrigation systems and dance to Amazigh music under the stars.
Day 1: Marrakech – Telouet – Ouarzazate – Skoura
Your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and drive across the plains of Marrakech towards the stunning Atlas Mountains. At the pass of Tizi n'Tichka (2062m), drop down into the valley that was once the route for Saharan caravans. Stop to visit the Kasbah of Telouet, then continue through the Ounila Valley to the famous UNESCO World Heritage village of Ait Ben Haddou – filming location for Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. Enjoy a walk through the Kasbah before driving via Ouarzazate to overnight at Skoura Oasis.
Day 2: Skoura Oasis
A full day of learning and discovery. Walk through the gardens of Skoura Oasis and spend the day with a local family from the village. Women will have the chance to interact with the family’s women, learning to bake bread in clay ovens and joining in with cooking. Men will take part in seasonal agricultural activities guided by local farmers. The day covers the ancient irrigation system, local architecture, and a visit to a family known for their pottery – an ancient craft inherited by the Berbers. In the evening, everyone comes together to dance and sing to the rhythms of Amazigh music.
Day 3: Skoura – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
After breakfast on the terrace overlooking the oasis, set off back towards Marrakech. Stop in Ouarzazate – the Hollywood of North Africa – with time to explore the town and pick up a picnic lunch. Your guide will find a beautiful shaded spot to stop en route. Arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, where your guide will give you a final orientation of the medina before departing.
