Discover the highlights of Morocco on this slow-paced, adventurous trip. From the imperial cities of Fez and Marrakech, with their vibrant souks, medinas and ancient Roman ruins, to the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi and the friendly Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains, this trip provides an excellent introduction to another culture.
Day 1: Casablanca
Welcome to the start of your Moroccan adventure! Arrive at Casablanca International Airport where our tour leader will assist you to your hotel. Afterward, head out to explore the magnificent Hassan II Mosque.
Day 2: Casablanca – Chefchaouen
Continue sightseeing with a short journey to Rabat, Morocco’s capital – visit the Hassan Mosque and Oudaya Kasbah. Then drive on to Chefchaouen, the famous blue city nestled in the Rif Mountains.
Day 3: Chefchaouen
Enjoy a morning walk through the blue alleyways of the old medina and hike uphill for spectacular views over the town. In the afternoon, explore the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, sample local goat cheese, admire the 15th-century Grand Mosque, and browse the Kasbah’s ethnographic museum. In the evening, enjoy a tagine at a local restaurant or visit a traditional hammam.
Day 4: Chefchaouen – Fez
Set off to visit the ruins of Volubilis, the last Roman city in Morocco, passing fields of lentils and chickpeas before arriving at the imperial city of Fez.
Day 5: Fez
A full guided tour of Fez el Bali, the ancient medina. Explore the labyrinth of craftsmen, markets, tanneries and mosques. Visit the Medersa Bou Inania, the Belghazi Museum, Medresse el Attarine and the beautifully restored 18th-century Funduk Nejjarine. See the famous tannery and a ceramics factory where potters work in the traditional way. Enjoy a group dinner of Moroccan food in the evening.
Day 6: Fez – Erg Chebbi
A long but spectacular 7-hour drive south through the Middle Atlas Mountains – fertile valleys, cedar and pine forests, barren rocky landscapes and Ziz Valley. Pass through cedar forests home to Barbary apes before arriving at the magical dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Day 7: Erg Chebbi
Visit nomad families among the Erg Chebbi dunes and explore the sand dunes on a loop. In the afternoon, visit Gnaoua musicians. At 5pm, mount the camels and ride into the Sahara to your camp for the night.
Day 8: Erg Chebbi – Skoura
Return by camel to your vehicle after breakfast, then head through the High Atlas Mountains to Todra Gorge – walk along the dramatic canyon and continue through the beautiful rose-scented Dades Valley to Skoura.
Day 9: Skoura – Marrakech
Drive through Ouarzazate – the Hollywood of North Africa – and visit a film studio. Stop to explore the incredible ancient fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, then cross the High Atlas Mountains back to Marrakech.
Day 10: Marrakech
Enjoy a guided tour of Marrakech taking in the Bahia Palace, Koutoubia Mosque, Koranic schools and the souks. The afternoon is free – perhaps visit the Majorelle Gardens.
Day 11: Departure
Transfer to the airport, or optionally extend your trip with a visit to Essaouira or nearby day trips.
